V-Nickels, also known as Liberty Head Nickels, were minted from 1883 to 1912 and were replaced by the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. As stated above, there are a few known 1913 V-Nickels in existance. The V-Nickel / Liberty Head Nickel was designed by Charles E. Barber. The V-Nickel also was wrapped in some controversy in 1883 when 'cents' was not included and they were being passed as $5 coins after being gold plated. These nickels are often called the "racketeer nickel".
